Our agency serves the Iu-Mien population of the Greater Sacramento Area which is home to the largest group of Iu-Mien outside of Southeast Asia. We provide services for all age groups and strive to bridge the gaps between generations, genders and our outside community. The Iu-Mien are refugees from Laos who fled their homes at the end of the Vietnam War. They had supported the American forces and were promised a safe refuge. They were nomadic farmers who lived in the mountains of Southeast Asia and had virtually no schooling or transferable skills. The transition to American life has been difficult, and because of the relatively small size of the group, they have largely gone unnoticed by the wider community. Iu-Mien Community Services (UIMC, Inc.) endeavors to link Iu-Mien people with access to local community services, empowerment of the community to succeed in transitioning to America, and to raise the awareness of the mainstream community about this dynamic population.
As a new organization and the only one serving the Iu-Mien people of Greater Sacramento, there is much work to be done. We have skills, ideas, enthusiasm to provide a wide range of services. In these times of limited funds, it is incumbent upon us as a new organization to show that we can raise funds which can then be used to find matching funds. Money raised through donations will be leveraged with grants and public funds to provide the best possible resources for the Iu-Mien community.
